Biochar

Biochar’s porous structure creates the perfect habitat for soil microbes and beneficial fungi to flourish. What is more, if one activates (also known as inoculating, maturing or charging) the biochar, the benefits are boosted. Activating the biochar before incorporating it in the garden prevents excessive nutrient binding which leaves a shortage for plants for a while. The biochar however effects nutrient gain once the binding evens out Biochar attracts and retains water molecules. This improves water retention in soil, which is particularly beneficial for areas that experience low rainfall. It reduces the potential leaching of nutrients and increases cation exchange capacity (CEC). That is, nutrients remain available for absorption by plant roots. Biochar has a negative charge that binds to nutrients such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. As a result, soil acidity is reduced. The need for fertilizer substantially decreases. Additionally, since nutrients are retained, it is safer for groundwater and surface water is produced
